14 photo small photos of Malick Sidibé, Bamako, Mali, 1935 or 1936 - 2016

When I visited Malick Sidibé eight or nine years ago in his studio in Bamako, there was nothing left to old photographs from the 60s and 70s. Sidibé was sick and tired. The year before, he was at the height of his success: the golden lion of the Biennale in Venice, which led to the great breakthrough and international recognition. Since then, a "run" has not only taken place in his own time, but also on those of his less gifted colleagues in Bamako and Segou.

Everything was bought up im,mediately by Parisian dealers and the old negatives of the 6 x 6 cameras were enlarged in the format sometimes more than1 x 1 meter. In the photo studios Bamakos one signed without end. Als ich Malick Sidibé vor acht oder neun Jahren in seinem Atelier in Bamako besuchte, gab es nichts mehr an alten Fotographien aus den 60iger und 70iger Jahren. Sidibé war krank und müde. Im Jahr zuvor stand er auf dem Gipfel seines Erfolges: Der goldene Löwe der Bienale in Venedig, der zum großen Durchbruch und zu internationaler Anerkennung führte. Seitdem fand ein "run" nicht nur auf seine Vintages statt sondern auch auf die seiner kaum weniger begabte Kollegen in Bamako und Segou.

Alles wurde in kürzester Zeit von Pariser Händlern aufgekauft und die alten Negative der 6 x 6 Kameras wurden vergrößert im Formatoft größer als 1 x 1 Meter. In den Foto Ateliers Bamakos signierte man ohne Ende. Anders als die alten Originale, die Sidibe noch selber auf seinem alten Vergrößerungsgerät abgezogen hatte mußte jetzt die Authentizität des Fotographen durch seine Unterschrift dokumentiert werden...read more
