An Ibo-Izzi mask, a subgroup of the Ibo people,which was used in dance ceremonies. This called "elephant" mask 'Ogbodo enyi' is worn horizontally on top of the head. As a 'support' serves a soft ring of plant fiber tissue. Formally, 'Ogbodo enyi' is a composite mask of parts of various animals: the tusks of an elephant point forward, then comes the open mouth of a hippopotamus, followed by parts of the warthog. The protruding projection on the forehead is interpreted as the 'trunk of the elephant', etc. 'Ogbodo enyi' is considered a 'friend of the village' and a good-natured mask creature that protects the community. Present elephant mask of Ibo-Izzi is an unusually old specimen: carved from light, extremly heavy wood, originally colored white, black and red colour.
