 A Bwa Ba Plank mask, the round face with circular eyes, protruding mouth and nose in shape of a curved beak, the geometric and crescent panel is decorated with high abstract, linear and triangular patterns in shape of a high abstract, stylized crocodile; fine aged patina with black, white paintings. According to Wheelock (2007: 410, text to pl. 140), plank masks such as the offered lot "are the major artistic expression of the southern Bwa. The masks are signboards or tablets on which the graphic patterns communicate the ethical and moral values of the community. The black and white checkerboardrepresents the value of lifelong learning."
