A Dogon maternity, of the Central Bandiagara region, Mali, posted on a circular base in kneeing position and holding a child close to her abdomen, solid conical breasts, on them rests a carved necklace, square shoulders leading to flattened arms, an elongated cylindrical neck supporting a helmet-like head with pointed mouth beneath a flattened nose leading to high arched brows, slanted almond-shaped eyes, downward-pointed u-shaped ears set low on the head, capped by a domed, single crested coiffure with an openwork zig-zag-carving at the back; a thick, encrusted sacrification patina, heavy, hard wood, several cracks, partly weathered, authentic old repairs on on the head.
