A Nunuma or Winiama buffalo mask, Burkina Faso, of hollowed oval form, an elongated snout and open mouth beneath target-shaped eyes, a raised perforated ridge running perpendicular between the eyes, atop an openwork superstructure, decorated with incised and painted lines and triangles, which represent moral lessons, around the rim pierced through for attachment; the entire mask is carved from a single piece of wood, decorated with black, white and red pigment, traces of use and age, incl. stand.
