Fire alarm mask / fire walker mask, called Zakpai, of the Dan tribe, Liberia / Ivory Coast, Dan Tura mask, from the region Biamkouma, rhomboid carved mask with open, circular eyes and protruding, accentuated lips; significant traces of use, fine, partly shiny patina. Provenance Mohamed Belo Garba.

Fire walker masks were used to report fires in the village to the men working in the fields. For this purpose, the fastest runner in the village was determined in a competition. Fire walker masks were mainly used by the northern Dan, a savanna region above the rainforest belt in which there is a more pronounced dry season and fires are more frequent.
