A Mangbetu terracotta figure from Congo depicting two riders on horseback, probably hunters, the faces of the two gaining a lively expression through visible teeth as if straight in conversation, both also looking to the same side. The head shapes correspond to the special tradition of the Mangbetu culture. The horse's mouth is also the eyepiece of the vessel, apart from a small damage on the right shoulder of the man in front, the sculpture is in good condition. This precious figure, which is also a vessel, superbly illustrates a Mangbetu art intended to draw attention to beauty. In the first quarter of the 20th century, some artists - in the village of Niangara and in the court of King Okondo - initiated the tradition of anthropomorphic ceramics, which became one of the most sensitive expressions of Mangbetu art, of which this figure is one. sold Height: 34 cm |
