A male Hemba sculpture, Kongolo region, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Central Africa, standing on a wooden base, knees slightly bent, hands on his stomach, his protruding navel is balanced out with his protruding bust, a thick cylindric neck supports his diamond shaped head from which a thin bearded jaw sticks out, accompanied by a delicate mouth and half closed eyes, the hairdo in the back is what is most beautiful in this sculpture, typical of Hemba style with this cross like shape; insect damage at the base, traces of ritual patina and signs of use.

"This idealized portrait commemorated and honored the lifetime accomplishments of a deceased male ancestor. With its serene expression, fine beard, high forehead, and elaborate cross-shaped hairstyle, the figure embodies the composure, status, and wisdom of a respected elder. As a spiritual mediator between the living and the dead, it was preserved with other such objects in a shrine where it linked the present ruler with his predecessor and underscored the legitimacy of his authority."
