An Ewe venavi female twin figure from Togo/Ghana, on a round base, made of light wood, the hair dyed black, the eyes outlined in black, the toenails/toes painted yellow, beautiful little wine-red beads around the waist; a fine patina from use.

Similar to the Yoruba in Nigeria, their eastern neighbours, the Ewe in Togo and Ghana, also worship their twins. And similar to the Yoruba's "Ibeji twin figures", the Ewe carve replacement figures for twins who have died. They are called "venavi" among the Ewe and look a little different: "venavi" are carved from a light, shiny wood and usually from the wood of the kapok tree.
