A Kalao bird trio, Ewe, Ghana / Togo. Certificate of origin and provenance.

Among the Ewe people of southeastern Ghana, traditional beliefs are deeply intertwined with the natural world. While direct documentation of the Kalao bird's role in Ewe rituals or symbolism is scarce, the Ewe's rich oral traditions and animistic beliefs suggest that birds like the hornbill could be seen as messengers or intermediaries between the spiritual and physical realms. Birds are often associated with deities or spirits, and their appearances or calls might be interpreted as omens or messages.
