Among the Senufo people of northern Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso, small bronze animal figures—often in the form of pendants—represent a distinct sculptural tradition associated with personal adornment, spiritual protection, and social identity. These miniature bronzes, typically cast using the lost-wax method, depict stylized representations of animals such as birds, chameleons, crocodiles, and antelopes. While diminutive in scale, they possess a density of meaning that connects the individual wearer to the broader cosmological and symbolic systems of Senufo culture.

The animals represented often embody specific attributes admired or feared in the Senufo worldview. For example, the chameleon, known for its slow, deliberate movements and ability to change color, may signify wisdom and adaptability. Birds—frequently associated with divination and ancestral communication—are among the most common motifs, underscoring the Senufo belief in the permeability between the physical and spiritual realms. These bronzes may have been worn by diviners (katólo) or other ritual specialists, or offered to them as tokens of respect and support.¹

Functioning both as ornament and amulet, such bronzes were not purely decorative. Their value resided in their capacity to mediate protective or beneficial forces. The material itself—bronze—carried social prestige and permanence, suggesting the endurance of the spiritual connection it embodied. While exact dating remains difficult due to the long continuity of bronze casting in the region, stylistic evidence points to a production span from the 19th century into the early 20th century, with certain motifs continuing in contemporary artisanal workshops for the tourist and collector markets.²

These pendants thus exemplify the integration of artistry, utility, and belief within the Senufo material world, and challenge Western distinctions between fine art, craft, and ritual object. Their small scale invites intimate engagement, mirroring their personal and esoteric function within the communities from which they originate.³
